GRAY — The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for Western Maine, but the area includes coastal Knox, Lincoln and Waldo counties - from Wiscasset and Boothbay Harbor up the coast through Lincolnville and Belfast.

As of Monday night, the winter storm watch is in effect Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 26, through late Wednesday night.

The NWS is predicting that significant accumulations of 6 inches or more of plowable snow are possible.

"Driving will become treacherous and will occur during one of the busiest travel days of the year," said the NWS in its weather statement Nov. 24 at 3:34 p.m.

Low pressure will move up the coast and reach the Mid-Atlantic area Wednesday, spreading snow northward into Maine and New Hampshire during the afternoon hours. The snow may begin as a brief period of rain over southern areas, but the primary precipitation will be snow, according to the NWS.

Winds will be from the north at 5 to 10 mph, with gusts up to 25 mph. Temperatures are expected to be in the lower 30s.
