Midcoast 14s finish 0-4 in Babe Ruth state tournament

AUGUSTA — After finishing 1-2 in district action, the Midcoast 14s all-star Babe Ruth baseball team advanced to the state tournament thanks to the District 2 champion, Augusta, already claiming a state tournament berth due to being the state tournament host site. 

In the state tournament, the local boys were not able to pick up any wins in pool play and were sent home Sunday, July 16 with four losses. 

Midcoast opened the state tournament Friday, July 14 with a 3-1 loss to Tri-County, which was followed up by a 4-2 loss to Portland Saturday, July 15. 

In a Sunday doubleheader, South Portland knocked off Midcoast 13-2 and Augusta bested Midcoast 8-3. 

South Portland 13, Midcoast 2

South Portland plated four runs in each the first and second innings, one in the fourth and two in each the fifth and sixth innings while Midcoast.

At the plate for Midcoast: Brandon Cournoyer (single), Joel Pitcher (run) and Nate Coombs (single, run). 

Adam Sirios and Pitcher worked the mound for the Midcoast. 

Augusta 8, Midcoast 3

Midcoast plated one in the first and two in the fourth while Augusta chalked up one in each the first and third in addition to two in each the fourth, fifth and seventh innings. 

At the plate for Midcoast: Joey Curtis (single, run), Cournoyer (single, run), Jason Greenleaf (run) and Dylan Abbott (single). 

Working the mound for Midcoast were Abbott and Sirois.
