Mid-day report from Knox County Emergency Management Agency

Tue, 01/27/2015 - 12:45pm

The following was received from Knox County EMA at noon today: Reports from National Weather Service Gray suggest heavy snowfall may be drawing to a close. Light snowfall should remain with us through tomorrow morning.  Continued high winds will still result in blowing and drifting snow and continued blizzard conditions throughout the afternoon and into the overnight.

For the most part everyone has cooperated and stayed home and off the roads. Thank you for that assistance and your continued patience!  Please resist the urge to get out and explore if you see snowfall slacking.  Public Works and DOT plow crews are working hard to keep at least single lanes of traffic open for emergency vehicles and, as conditions ease, will be able to open roads up.  Give them some time, and room, to clear the roads before venturing out; traffic adds to the difficulty of plowing and slows progress greatly.

Pedestrians should be extra careful.  Sidewalks are still snow covered leaving walking in a limited roadway a hazardous option.  If you must get out and walk, wear brightly colored clothing and be aware of any traffic around you.

Snow is drifting heavily on the downwind side (generally South) of many homes and buildings.  If you have a heating appliance or water heater exhaust vent located on a south wall, please check to make sure it is clear to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.

As of 11:45 a.m., CMP was reporting only a single customer without power in Knox County.

Knox Regional Dispatch took numerous calls this morning about a stabilizing wire down at the traffic lights at the entrance to the Pen Bay Medical Center.  Maine DOT will attend to that issue when conditions moderate.

The County Emergency Operations Center remains open and staffed with EMA and Red Cross personnel to monitor and assist as necessary.
