ROCKPORT – Oceanside High School may be young in years, but one of its stellar athletes had an incredible night on the hardwood and set a new school record for points in a game according to Don Shields, who called the game on 105.5 Frank FM, to lead the Mariners over the Camden Hills squad 83-64.

Nicholas Mazurek tallied 33 points in the winning effort along with playing excellent defense.

"I felt like I had a good balance of shots from the inside and the outside,” said Mazurek. "I wasn't predictable so it was harder [to] defend me. And second of all, I just had lots of confidence tonight. It felt like no matter where I was shooting from I was gonna make [the shot]. And fortunately, they did go tonight."

The pervious owners of the record were Isaiah Stone-Patterson, who scored 29 against Belfast in the 2011-12 season and last year Nick Judge who scored 29 against Gardiner.

Oceanside High School was opened in 2011 as a consolidation of Rockland District High School and Georges Valley High School of Thomaston. Mazurek, a junior at the school, is also an outstanding golfer and baseball player, a true three sport athlete.

This was an unusual game in the sense there was no school at either of the two institutions Wednesday, but the game had already been postponed from its original game day of Tuesday, Jan. 27. Though the roads were not ready for busses Wednesday morning, both towns were ready for travel by late morning and the games were on.

Mazurek was not alone in his assault of the Windjammers as teammate Keenan Hendricks poured in 20 points combining with Mazurek to score 53 of the teams 84 points.

The cheer from the Oceanside student body on hand for the game, “You can’t stop him”, had double meaning for the Windjammers who found if they did stop one, the other one got them.

Mazurek has scored 54 points in two games against the Windjammers this season.

Camden Hills opened the game with a 6-0 run that quickly became a 9-6 game after three steals off the full court press and a Nate Raye three point basket from behind the arc. From that point on, Camden Hills was playing catchup, something the Mariners were not about to let happen.

After the first quarter, Oceanside was up 25-17 and took a 51-36 lead into the halftime break. By the end of the third quarter, the Mariners held a 66-45 lead and maintained that lead through the final stanza for the win.

Between the two teams, 41 percent of the points in the game came from behind the arc as Camden Hills poured in 11 3-pointers and Oceanside nine in the game. Each team was on fire in the first half tallying eight trey’s per team. Only four were made in the second half with Oceanside’s only one coming from Mazurek.

Scoring for the Mariners were Mazurek with 33 points; Hendricks 20; Raye 12; Eli Thorbjornson and Jarrod Leonardi six each; Walker ranney three; Jimmy Strong two; and Zeke Hamlin one.

The Mariners were 20-of-26 (77 percent) from the foul line. They nailed nine 3-pointers, four from Mazurek, three from Raye and two from Hendricks.

For Camden Hills, they had three players in double figures, Noah Heidorn had 13 points; Devin Vangel 12; and Gage Corson 10. Other scorers for the Windjammers were, Andrew Hall with eight points; Gavin Boyd five; Josiah Krul, Dalton Oakes and Nate Pascal four each; and Jack Gallagher three.

The Windjammers were 9-of-16 (56 percent) from the charity stripe and hit from 3-point range 11 times. Vangel (4), Corson (3), Hall (2) Oakes (1) and Heidorn (1).

In the Heal Point standings from the Maine Principals’ Association, Oceanside is currently in eighth place with a tournament index of 48.8580 and a 10-5 record with three games left in the regular season against Erskine Academy, Medomak valley and Morse of Bath to finish the season. The top 13 teams qualify for the playoffs. If the season ended today, the Mariners would be hosting a preliminary playoff game.

Camden Hills is in 16th place with a 4-11 record and have Belfast, Morse and Medomak Valley left. They would probably need to win out to make the playoffs this year.
