TENANTS HARBOR and GREENWICH, Conn. — Martha U. Lord, 93, died peacefully Oct. 28, 2014, with her loving family at her side, at her home on Turkey Point.

Born Aug. 16, 1921, in Milwaukee, Wisc., she was the daughter of John and Loretta Syburg Urquhart. Martha was a graduate of Madeira School for Girls in Virginia, and later graduated from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree.

Following her graduation from college, Martha enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving as a WAVE (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) with Fleet Operations, stationed in San Diego. After being honorably discharged, Martha attended Parsons School for Design in New York City. While living in New York with her aunt, she met the love of her life, Herbert Mayhew Lord, who coincidentally was born on Limerock Street in Rockland. The two were married in Manhattan in July 1948.

In the late 1950s, the couple moved to Connecticut, settling in Greenwich, where they remained for the rest of their married life.

Mrs. Lord was extremely active in her Greenwich community. She was a member of The Field Club of Greenwich, Friends of the Greenwich Library, the Greenwich Garden Club and the American Shakespeare Festival Theater; and was very active in the Isabelle O'Neil Studio in New York City. Mrs. Lord was also a valued member of the Handicraft Club of Providence, R.I. Until as recently as 2012, at the age of 91, Mrs. Lord made the three-hour weekly drive to participate in the study and creation of Early American Decoration.

Mr. and Mrs. Lord began summering in Maine at the Lord family cottage on Marshall Point shortly after their marriage. For several years they stayed with Mr. Lord's parents, who had retired there. Eventually they purchased their own cottage next door before building their current home in Turkey Cove in 1983. Her children said she never missed a summer in Maine, and holds the family record for consecutive summer visits.

Mrs. Lord began a passion for traveling as a young adult after a memorable trip to Europe and the British Isles. Later in life she continued her love of traveling, especially enjoying trips to Japan and India. She also took great pleasure in sharing her home with others, cooking and entertaining, and was known for her Turkey Point Relish and barbecue marinade. She was an avid reader and lover of British classic movies and BBC dramas. She will be sadly missed by all who loved her.

Mrs. Lord was predeceased by her beloved husband; a son, Herbert M. Lord Jr., and a daughter, Martha Elizabeth “Lisi” Lord. She is survived by her sons, John Urquhart Lord and his wife, Alma Delia, of Puebla, Mexico, and Kenneth Wightman Lord and his wife, Mimi Khetpanya, of Manhattan, N.Y.; her daughters-in-law, Helen Lord and Jennifer Walker Lord; eight grandchildren, David, Sharon, Matthew, Rebecca and Benjamin Cooper Lord, Kayla Levin, Emily and Christina Barrett; 14 great-grandchildren, Avery Lord, Rayito, Danielle, Betty, Laura, Alejandra and Lizzy Sanchez, Madelyn and Will Lord, Grayson and Finley Mullin, and Adina, Zoe and Moishe Levin; one great-grandchild on the way; her dear friend and care-giver, Monica De Stefano; as well as many close friends.

A gathering at the family home will be announced in the summer of 2015.
