ROCKLAND — Marjorie DeMotte "Midge" Welch, 74, passed away Nov. 24, 2015, at Quarry Hill, after a long illness.

Midge was born in Staten Island, N.Y., on Sept. 8, 1941, daughter of Joy Tamblyn DeMotte and Washburn Payne DeMotte. She graduated from Wayneflete School, in Portland, in 1959, and from Colby College in 1963. She received a master’s degree in counseling from Gannon University and a master’s degree of social work from the University of Maine.

Midge spent many years working in the human services field, including with the Maine Department of Health and Human Services in Rockland, the Augusta Mental Health Institute and Kno-Wal-Lin Hospice. She was a wonderful advocate for those who could not advocate for themselves.

Midge was a lifelong member of the Episcopal Church, and an active and faithful member of St. Peter's Church in Rockland for over 30 years, where she had many friends. She studied and mentored others through the Education for Ministry program.

Midge is survived by her spouse of 23 years, Sheila Seekins of Rockland; her brother, Laurence DeMotte of Bangor; her daughters, Susan Welch of Atlanta, Ga., and Ann Hunter and her husband, Mark, of Buxton; and four grandchildren, Evan, Noah, Sarah and Caleb Hunter. Midge deeply treasured and delighted in Susan and Ann, as well as Ann's family.

She loved woods and water, tent camping and kayaking, hiking, bird watching. And books - books and reading. She felt privileged to meet many very interesting people in her life.

A visitation and wake service will be held, Friday, Nov. 27, from 5 to 7 p.m. at St. Peter's Episcopal Church on White Street in Rockland, where a funeral service will be held Saturday, Nov. 28, at 10 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St Peter's Episcopal Church, 11 White Street, Rockland, ME 04841.

Arrangements are in the care of Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home.
