LINCOLNVILLE — A sharp-eyed Waldo County Sheriff's deputy made not one but two arrests last week, after he first recognized and apprehended a man who was being sought for arrest out of state.

Waldo County deputy Cody Laite was traveling on Belfast Road in Lincolnville around 11:15 a.m. on Jan. 15 when he observed Benjamin Spencer, 48, of Dayton, Va., operating a vehicle. According to a press release Jan. 20, Laite was aware that there was an active warrant out of Virginia for Spencer's arrest.

Laite stopped the vehicle, and placed Spencer under arrest. According to the release, the warrant for Class 6 felony abduction, by parent, and issued out of the Rockingham County Sheriff's Office in Harrisburg, Va.

Spencer was allowed to make a phone call to have someone pick up his vehicle, and when that individual, 43-year-old Stephen Boyle of Northport, arrived, Laite recognized him and knew that his driver's license was currently suspended. Laite also knew that Boyle had active bail conditions.

Laite arrested Boyle and charged him with operating after suspension and violation of conditions of release.

Laite transported both men to the Waldo County Correction Center, where Boyle was released on $100 cash bail. Spencer was transferred to Two Bridges Regional Correctional Center in Wiscasset, where he is currently being held.
