CAMDEN — A 76-year-old Camden man with dementia is doing well Wednesday, according to the Maine Warden Service, after he became lost Tuesday afternoon from an assisted living home on John Street.

Camden Police at 10 p.m. Sept. 20 called state Game Warden Cpl. Michelle Merrifield to help search for the man identified as Peaceful Dawn. Dawn was last seen at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon on John Street, near the entrance to Merry Gardens Estates, an assisted living apartment facility where he lives.

After searching the area near Merry Gardens Estates, Merrifield and her K9, Piper, attempted to track Dawn. The pair checked a grassy entrance to a nearby power line to see if Piper detected any scent and when the dog did, Merrifield called Dawn's name and heard a faint response, according to the Warden Service in a press release.

Dawn was located nearly 400 yards away on the power line from John Street. Dawn had apparently walked into a swamp, where he could no longer move.

Officials said that Dawn was confused, dehydrated and weak. His legs were covered with abrasions and he could not stand on his own.

Merrifield contacted Camden Police Officer Sam Butler to assist with the difficult removal of Dawn from the swamp. But when it became too difficult for the two to remove Dawn, Camden Fire Department responded with a litter and carried Dawn back to an awaiting ambulance, where he was evaluated.
