NORTH HAVEN — Maine Marine Patrol is calling Maddie “one lucky dog,” after she inexplicably went off her owner’s boat unnoticed and into the ocean, and was later rescued while swimming for her life near North Haven.

According to the Maine Marine Patrol, Maddie, a spaniel, was recently enjoying a day on-board her owner's recreational boat near North Haven when she went in the water. The owner did not immediately notice and she spent some time swimming until North Haven lobsterman Corey Beverage saw her and plucked her from the water, most certainly saving her life.

While Beverage reportedly cared for Maddie, other local fishermen contacted Marine Patrol and began looking for the owner, who was soon located searching the area for their dog.

Beverage told Marine Patrol Officer Matthew Wyman that his grandfather had lost a dog to a similar fate, so he knew how the owner must have felt.

“Thanks to Corey and the other local fishermen, this story has a happy ending. But it's also a reminder to keep a very close eye on your pets if you bring them on board this summer!” said Marine Patrol on their Facebook page, where this story was originally posted.
