Letter to the editor: Mike Thibodeau's funding facts

I strongly encourage voters who think that Senator Michael Thibodeau's campaign is only funded by in state money to become better acquainted with the facts. As of October 24, Thibodeau's campaign committee and PACs (Political Action Committees) that he controls has received  nearly $490,000, with 48 percent coming from out of state. Now it is up to 51 percent! On this list are some familiar names like Monsanto (nearly $3,000), Philip Morris, RJ Reynolds, Anheuser Busch, Texas Instruments and more. These are not “mom & pop” local businesses! You can learn more about his financing at www.mainecampaignfinance.com.

Thibodeau has sent around a mailer expressing pride in his support for cancer care. And yet he has received $9,000 from tobacco companies Philip Morris and RJ Reynolds, in addition to voting against Maine Care support for smoking cessation programs. This reeks of hypocrisy!

Under Maine's Clean Election rules, his opponent Jonathan Fulford is not in cahoots with big corporations. There is a lot of finger pointing going on now about one out of state PAC that has contributed to Jonathan's campaign. But unlike Thibodeau, Fulford  neither courted nor approved of this outside money, nor does Fulford have any control over this.

I just couldn't bear to remain silent after reading yet another letter of support for Thibodeau from a voter thinking his interests and funding was only about serving Mainers. There are a lot of fingers in his pot, and they definitely aren't all from Maine!
