Knox man receives prison sentence for Belfast hit-and-run

Sentenced to three years for hit and run

    BELFAST — The driver of a vehicle that struck Belfast City Councilor Eric Sanders in March 2013 was sentenced April 9 in Waldo County Superior Court to three years in prison.

    Steven R. Lucas, 60, of Knox, faced charges of aggravated leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident, driving to endanger and operating under the influence resulting in injury. As part of a plea agreement the charge of operating under the influence was dismissed. 

    The March 8, 2013, accident occurred on Main Street when Sanders, who was nearing completion of a 20-mile bike ride, was hit from behind by a vehicle. The car’s operator then left the scene of the accident.

    Lucas, who has remained behind bars since his arrest last year w,as sentenced to three years in prison and had his license suspended for two years. He also received a $750 fine and must pay $500 restitution.

    Sanders, who was knocked unconscious on impact, suffered numerous bumps and bruises, and required 50 stitches to reattach a badly damaged ear.
