The Knox County Sheriff's Office is mourning the loss of former Deputy Corey Dodge, of Dexter. Dodge was killed while working for DynCorp in Kabul, Afghanistan, by a suicide bomber.

Dodge was hired as a full-time deputy in March of 1999 and served in that capacity until February 2006, when he decided to leave the office to deploy overseas as a private contractor to be a law enforcement instructor in Afghanistan. During his time at the Sheriff's Office, Dodge became a certified Hostage Negotiator, a Field Training Officer and was a Maine Criminal Justice Academy Instructor in Defensive Tactics, Interactive Use of Force, Stinger Spikes (road spikes), and radar.

He was recognized by his supervisors as motivated, thorough, and highly productive. Dodge was chosen as Deputy of the Year in 2002.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family,” said the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, on Aug. 24.

The attack occurred Saturday, Aug. 22, in Kabul when a suicide car bomber attacked a convoy of NATO armored vehicles traveling through a neighborhood.
