MAIZE, Kan. — Jeffrey Alan Hallowell, 52, formerly of Owls Head, Maine, died Feb. 12, 2016, after a 14-year battle with amyoteophic lateral sclerosis. He was surrounded by his loving family, friends and wonderful caregivers.

Jeff was born Nov. 13, 1963, in Rockland, Maine, to Judith and Albert Hallowell.

Jeff graduated Rockland High School in 1982. He also attended Bridgton Academy and Maine Maritime Academy. He later received a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from Hartford University in Minneapolis, Minn., in May of 1992. He was employed as a mechanical engineer at Benecor Inc., Maize, Kan., where they manufactured airplane parts.

Jeff was a great athlete and enjoyed varsity basketball, track, tennis, scuba diving and golf.

Growing up Jeff spent many summers at the family cottage on Crawford Lake in Union. A highlight for Jeff was bringing his son, Ethan, to Maine and to be at the cottage to watch Ethan swim, fish, and to enjoy boating, and cookouts with family, friends and caregivers.

Jeff was a great fan of NASCAR Racing. He entered a contest and won first place for his design of Kyle Buseti's #18 Toyota Race car to help defeat ALS. He and his family enjoyed many of the Kansas NASCAR races. They met with famous drivers and also their families. Toyota presented Jeff with a handicapped-equipped Toyota van so he could make his appointments and be independent.

Jeff was predeceased by his grandparents, Helen and Frank Hallowell; and his dear mother, Judith Childs Hallowell. He is survived by his beloved son, Ethan Joseph Hallowell, and his mother, Jill Hallowell; his father, Albert Hallowell; his sister, Nancy Fakhoury; his brother-in-law, George Fakhoury; his niece, Gabriella Fakhoury; his nephew, Gino Fakhoury; his aunts, Dottie Grant and Barbara Verdone; and his uncle, Lawrence Verdone; as well as many beloved aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and dear friends. He will be missed by all who loved him so dearly.

A special thank you to Dr. Raelyn Mefford and to all of Jeff’s caregivers who gave him excellent care over the years. A very special thank you to Phoenix Home Care and Hospice.

A graveside service will be held Monday, June 5, at 2 p.m. at Achorn Cemetery on Old County Road in Rockland. The Rev. Wayne Sawyer will officiate.
