BELFAST — The University of Maine Hutchinson Center and the Midcoast Leadership Academy (MLA) will be offering a nine-month UMaine certificate program designed for current and emerging citizen leaders in Midcoast Maine. Classes will meet on one Friday per month during the program. Continuing Education Unit's (CEU's) and contact hours are available.

Patricia Libby, Director of the Hutchinson Center, said, "the UMaine Midcoast Leadership Certificate Program supports our mission to provide leadership education within the communities that we serve."
MLA's mission is to "positively impact the economic and cultural quality of life in mid-coast Maine by enhancing the professional and personal development of existing and emerging community leaders."

Each program year, a select group of individuals is thoughtfully chosen from Knox and Waldo Counties through an application process which aims to provide diversity of thought, knowledge, and experience within the class. Applications are now being accepted for the 2017-2018 class (MLA8) that begins on September 21.

The Academy brings together emerging and established leaders, sharpening current skills, developing new ones, broadening understanding of pertinent community issues,
building networks, and forming the relationships necessary to sustain a strong mid-coast community leadership base.

During the nine-month program, existing and emerging citizen leaders from Knox and Waldo counties will meet monthly to sharpen and develop effective leadership skills and broaden their understanding of issues affecting the region, including healthcare, local government, the creative economy, education, state government, traditional economic drivers, the justice system and our unique communities.
"We have worked extensively with the Hutchinson Center in past program years and look forward to partnering with the University of Maine in our 8th program year," said Robin McIntosh, program co-facilitator.

The Midcoast Leadership Academy has a growing and diverse alumni base of over 120 leaders across mid-coast Maine and beyond. The Unity Foundation is a sustaining partner and Bangor Savings Bank is the lead program sponsor. Sponsorships are still available.
