ROCKLAND — Frederick J. Philip Sr., 81, died Nov. 22, 2014, surrounded by his family at his home, after a period of declining health.

Born in Vinalhaven on Aug. 4, 1933, he was one of 11 children of John M. “Red” and Clara Walls Philip. He was a graduate of Vinalhaven High School.
July 9, 1955, he married Nancy A. Metcalf in Rockland, where they lived all their married lives. Nancy died September 11, 2003.

Fred worked many years at 40 Fathoms Sea Food, which later became National Sea Products in Rockland.

For the past ten years, he enjoyed the companionship of Marchia Firth of South Thomaston.

In addition to his wife and siblings, Fred was predeceased by two grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He is survived by one son, Frederick J. Philip Jr. of Rockland; four daughters, Cindy L. Dennison and her companion, Russell Campbell, of Warren, Cheryl A. Metcalf of Waldoboro, Angela D. O'Leary and her husband, James, of Chelsea, and Annette E. Grierson and her husband, Chester, of South Thomaston; two brothers, Cecil Philip of Rockland and Freeland Philip and his wife, Hilda, of South Thomaston; one sister, Evelyn Thompson of Bucksport; 18 grandchildren, including granddaughter Lacy Philip, who lived with Fred and cared for him during his illness; many great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family.

Per Fred's direction, no services will be held.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Bob Gagnon Cancer Care Fund, c/o Pen Bay Health Care, 22 White St., Rockland, ME 04841.
