CAMDEN — Evelyn Elizabeth Martin, 90, died peacefully Oct. 8, 2014, with her family by her side, at Waldo County General Hospital, after several years of declining health. She was born Jan. 13, 1924, in Worcester, Mass., the only child of Charles and Rachel (Pearson) Nelson.

Evelyn was a Horace Mann Scholar at South High School in Worcester, Class of 1941, graduating in the same class as her future husband, Stuart. She attended the Massachusetts School of Art in Boston, graduating in 1945 with a bachelor's degree in art education. Evelyn taught art at the high school level for several years, both in Boston and Sutton, Mass., school systems.

In June 1946, at Bethlehem Covenant Church in Quinsigamond Village in Worcester, Evelyn married her childhood sweetheart, Stuart Huxley Martin. Her husband, Stuart, graduated a medical doctor from Tufts Medical School in 1948, and was then called to active duty with the U.S. Navy at the outbreak of the Korean War. After early postings to Yap and Ponape islands in the Pacific Caroline Islands Group, Evelyn followed Stuart around the world as he pursued a 28-year Navy Medical Corps career. Navy hospital postings soon followed to Corona and Oakland, Calif.; Taipei, Taiwan; Bremerton, Wash.; Memphis, Tenn.; and finally a posting to the Naval Academy Hospital in Annapolis, Md.

Capt. and Mrs. Martin retired to Camden in 1971, when Dr. Martin accepted a staff position at the Camden Community Hospital. Evelyn and Stuart spent more than 40 enjoyable years in Camden, where they both sang in the Camden Congregational Church choir. Evelyn could often be found at home silk screening posters for the Camden Civic Theater and tending to her beautiful Main Street backyard gardens.

Her husband of 62 years died in March 2009 at age 84. Evelyn is survived by her five children and their spouses: her son Peter and his wife, Karen, of Camden, her daughter, Suzanne and her husband, Dr. Richard M. Gramly, of North Andover Mass., her daughter, Deborah and her husband, retired U.S. Army Col. Robert McFetridge Esq. (JAG), of Lake Forest Calif., her daughter, Sara and her husband, Elliott Jacobowitz, of Andover Mass., and her daughter, Nancy and her husband, Jeff O'Reilly, of Acworth, Ga. She is also survived by eight granddaughters, Lauren, Heather, Christina, Candace, Kelly, Morgan, Jessi and Erin; and one grandson, U.S. Army 2nd Lt. Kenneth; and two great-granddaughters, Amelia and Josephine. She was predeceased by a grandson, Richard.

The family extends a special note of thanks to her PALS caregivers for their compassion and care during the almost eight years she was cared for in her home.

Gifts in her memory may be made to the Camden Area District Nursing Association, P.O. Box 547, Camden, ME 04843.

Services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are with Long Funeral Home & Cremation Service.
