ROCKLAND/THOMASTON – One adult male is in custody after allegedly attempting to flee the scene of a two car accident on Old County Road in Rockland, Tuesday, Dec. 5.

In the moments before the 11:30 a.m. accident, Knox dispatchers received numerous complaints out of Rockland of a vehicle operating erratically and traveling at a high rate of speed along Old County Road.

A male, driving a small, dark green four-door car, went around the traffic heading in the same direction toward Thomaston before returning to the lane and hitting the rear bumper of the car in front of him, police said.

The other driver was traveling at 45 miles per hour, according to Thomaston Police Chief Timothy Hoppe. Some callers reported the green car’s speed as nearing 100 mph.

Thomaston and Rockland police, fire, and EMS were called to the scene because first reports could not determine which town the incident initially occurred.

“The accident actually occurred in Rockland,” Hoppe, said from the Thomaston site where the first car stopped.

“We’re literally 10 feet from the town line,” he said.

The impact sent the other car spinning onto a nearby lawn on the opposite side of the street. The erratic driver’s vehicle also crossed over the other lane, hitting the utility pole a few feet from the first driver.

The driver of the green car put his vehicle into reverse and sped farther down the road into Thomaston before losing control and hitting a boulder about one quarter to one half-mile distance from the first part of the crash, police said.

The male then exited the car and started to run, but was immediately stopped and held by Hoppe until another officer arrived to take him to the Knox County Jail. Hoppe then drove to the first site to check on the woman.

“The report is that he [the erratic driver] was driving aggressively, and actually had some prior damage to his car as reported by a witness,” Hoppe said.

The female was taken to Penobscot Bay Medical Center as a precaution. According to Hoppe, the woman did not have any “visible, serious injuries.”

After being at the jail for a short time, the male was also transported to PBMC with complaints of back pain.

The owners of the home where the first accident occurred did not see the accident, though they heard the loud noise. However, they said they are not overly surprised that any accidents occur along the road. Not long ago, two cars almost took out their mailbox.
