SEARSMONT — Spring in Maine has been a long time coming, some would say, especially for those who enjoy the sport of racing on the St. George River. This year, the 38th annual race, was delayed a week due to the formation of a fresh ice on the river, but was ultimately run April 2 and included a mixture of kayaks, canoes and one paddle boarder.

Organized by the Waldo County YMCA, the start of the crafts were staggered by officials, while family and friends looked on and cheered. Some competitors took off silently, while others let out excited yells as they went under the overpass and quickly disappeared around the first bend of the winding race course.

The race spans six miles, beginning at St. George Bridge in Searsmont, and encompasses both calm waters and rapids that can reportedly reach Class III, depending on the water level at the time.

Lincolnville resident and filmmaker Josh Gerritsen was at this year’s St. George River Race with his father, he said, and submitted a video, with drone footage, of the race event. Thanks for sharing the video and great job by all who participated in and organized the races.
