CUSHING — A LifeFlight of Maine helicopter and medical crew picked up a 17-year-old male driver in Thomaston late Saturday morning, after he crashed his car in Cushing and sustained incapacitating injuries.

According to Knox County Sheriff's Lt. Reggie Walker, the Cushing teenager was driving a Saab sedan northbound and exceeding the speed limit on River Road Oct. 3 when he lost control. The car crossed the center line and the teenager over-corrected, causing him to drive off the road and crash into a utility pole.

According to Knox County Sgt. John Palmer's report, the utility pole moved more than 14 inches due to the impact. He also reported that the weather was clear and the road surface was dry as the car drove along River Road, approximately 1.8 miles south of Spears Mill Road.

After the impact, when the car came to rest in the ditch, next to the pole, the teenager was trapped inside. The extent of the damage was to the driver's front side, and Warren Fire had to use hydraulic tools to extricate him from the wreckage.

Thomaston Police Department responded to the scene with Palmer, as did Cushing Fire and Rescue and Rockland EMS.

The teenager was initially transported by ambulance to Fales Store in Thomaston, where the helicopter picked him up and transported him to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.

In his report, Palmer said that a summons for imprudent speed is pending .
