GRAY — The National Weather Service is now warning Mainers that Tuesday night’s blizzard is poised to bring bands of heavy snow over the next few hours at the rate of 2 to 4 inches per hour.

In addition, winds gusts along the immediate coast are now forecast to be up to 60 mph, and 50 mph inland. There is now greater potential for power losses due to downed limbs and power lines.

A blizzard warning remains in effect until Wednesday morning. Travel is strongly discouraged, as snow covered roads and very low visibility will combine with strong winds to make travel nearly impossible.

For those planning to use a portable generator, be sure to observe all safety precautions to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning, electrocution or fire. Be sure to operate the generator in a dry outdoor area away from windows, doors and vents. Carbon monoxide poisoning deaths can occur due to improperly located portable generators.
