2014 Maine Celtic Celebration

Celtic tunes fill the Belfast Common all day Sunday

Sun, 07/20/2014 - 1:30pm

BELFAST — The 2014 Maine Celtic Celebration continues Sunday with lots of Celtic music on Belfast Common.

While the Highland Heavy Games are underway below the Common, along the waterfront, event organizers are readying the cheese for the annual Cheese Roll competition. Next up on the main stage is Cóig, from Cape Breton. The combined talents of Rachel, Colin, Chrissy, Darren and Jason have been making the Maine rounds and this afternoon at 2 p.m. they will be bringing the very best of Cape Breton music and dance to Belfast.

    The afternoon schedule follows:

    Main Stage on the Common

1:30-2 p.m. — New World Cheese Roll Championship (Down the hill on the Common. Catch it if you can!)
    2-2:50 p.m.
     — Cóig
    3:10-4 p.m.
     — Cillian Vallely and Ryan McGiver (Pipes and guitar. All the way from Ireland-but he lives in NYC now-Cillian is just about the finest Irish piper around and a member of the brilliant band, Lunasa. Ryan's songs and guitar are becoming a must listen for any Celtic/folk enthusiast.)
    4-4:30 p.m.
     — Belfast Bay Fiddlers (Talent from right here in the Midcoast, rounding out our 2014 celebrations.)

    Steamboat Stage

1:45-2:30 p.m. — Michael Black Family (This year Michael performs with his three daughters, Ciara, Maeve and Catriona, and is also accompanied by Cornish accordion player Chris Brinn.)
    2:50-3:35 p.m.
     — The Galley Rats (Back by popular request, these lads thrilled us last year with their take on some great Maritime songs, rounding out 2014 on our Steamboat Stage.)

    Bay Stage

2 p.m. — Maine Youth Celtic Harp Ensemble

Admission is free  into the festival, which includes Celtic music all day, food and vendors, games for kids and more. The event relies on donations, and contributions help fund this year's celebration.
