Camden Public Library has busy two weeks coming up

    CAMDEN — The Camden Public Library has a month filled with events, and here is what is on the schedule from Dec. 3 to 17. 

    Thursday, Dec. 3
    • Author Roger C. Taylor will present L. Francis Herreshoff: Yacht Designer at 7 p.m. Taylor was the founder of International Marine Publishing of Rockport; his book on Herreshoff chronicles the life and work of a yacht designer.

    Friday, Dec. 4
    • Christmas-by-the-Sea Opening Ceremonies, 4:30-6 p.m., featuring Camden Hills Regional High school vocal groups and instrumental ensembles performing seasonal selections.

    Saturday, Dec. 5
    • Santa arrives by boat at Camden Harbor at noon, and then to the library for Santa’s Story Hour. There will be opportunities for photographs with Santa following the story hour.

    • Simply Books monthly meeting at 2 p.m. A book group designed for book lovers; all are welcome.

    Sunday, Dec. 6
    • Ho Ho Holiday Book Fair with children’s book authors and illustrators, 2-4 p.m., co-hosted by the library and Sherman’s Books. The Fair is part of Camden’s Christmas by the Sea Weekend, and will feature authors and illustrators Chris Van Dusen, Ronni Arno, Susan Hood, Wendy Ulmer, Sandy Crabtree, Russ Cox, Cathryn Falwell, Licia Morelli, Douglas Coffin, Sarah Thompson, G.A. Morgan, Fran Hodgkins and Liza Kleinman.

    Tuesday, Dec. 8
    • Leer y charlar, a read-and-chat Spanish-language reading and conversation group, 1 p.m. All who are conversant in Spanish are welcome.

    • Tuesday Book Club monthly meeting, 1 p.m. The book selection will be The Wives of Los Alamos by TaraShea Nesbit. Call 470-7473 for more information.

    • Reading Group of the Camden Philosophical Society monthly meeting, the topic will be 19th and 20th Century Critiques of Capitalism. All are welcome and involvement in earlier discussions is not a prerequisite.

    Clarity opening reception, 6-8 p.m. The library will once again exhibit the work of the artist team Clarity, Robert and Su.Sane Hake, during the month of December. This year’s show is entitled Mother Tongue.

    Thursday, Dec. 10
    • Heidi Karod will present a slide talk on her recent trip to Peru, where she volunteered with Center for Child and Adolescent Workers, 7 p.m. Karod travels with her violin to help draw attention to the organization, and to encourage children to enroll. She will also talk about playing her violin in the Peruvian federal prisons, psychiatry hospitals, a fishing village and a school in a remote farming community.

    Monday, Dec. 14
    • Dr. Judi Valentine will present Survive the Turbulence: 10 Easy Steps to Avoid Holiday Weight Gain and Burnout at the Wellness Brown Bag Lunch, noon. 

    Tuesday, Dec. 15
    Diamond Myths and Realities with Craig Mudge, part of the Camden Conference Community Events series on Africa, 7 p.m., free and open to all.

    Wednesday, Dec. 16
    Soundscapes with Dave Morrison, poetry and music, 1 p.m., hosted by Quarry Hill, part of the Adventures in Living Well Series. Free, but registration is required; call 921-6116.    

    Thursday, Dec. 17
    • The original Star Wars movie (1977, 121 minutes, PG) in the Reading Room, 6:30 p.m., free. This original episode of Star Wars is now dubbed Episode IV: A New Hope. Come in costume and join the excitement.
