ROCKPORT — Following is a recap of this year’s Camden Hills Mountain Biking team.

Head Coach: Gary Spinney; first year working with the program.

2013 Recap: The Mountain Bike Team became Maine State Champions for 15 years in a row as well as the New England Champions for 2011.

Returning and New Impact Players: Juniors Aidan Acosta, Shawn Albertson, Cyrus Demmons and freshman Zeb Pease will lead Camden towards its 16th consecutive State Title this year. Juniors Cyrus Demmons, Nick Czuchra, Zachary Hand Max Horovitz, sophomores Owen Hilt and Zoe Zwecker, will also help lead the Windjammers this season. Juniors Hans Christian Angel, Makoto Hayashi, sophomores Japheth Scott and Kaden Harrison Billiate, and some others, will continue to drive the junior varsity team to victory.

Lost to Graduation: Camden lost a lot seniors from last year, including standouts Chapin Lamont, Alex Mansius, Rebekah Hilt. Lost also were Quinn Duggan, Brendan Carey, and Joe Simmons.

Strengths: Our training ritual is simple, yet effective. Train and work hard, and have fun in the process. The student athletes average between 500-600 miles a season on the bikes in a two-month period of time. We are very fortunate to have some great training venues around like the Camden Snow Bowl and near the school. The team rides and helps maintain the trails at the Camden Snow Bowl and around the school. Both places are a wonderful resource and we look forward to riding there again this season.

Outlook: "We will continue to work hard as a team and strive for excellence, whether out on the trails, or in the classroom." said Spinney. Camden Hills [competed] in the 12 Hours Of Bradbury this season. Having Camden Hills present at this popular race should help promote high school mountain bike racing. We are also pleased to announce that Brian Alexander, and the folks from Central Maine (NEMBA) will be putting together a fantastic race course at The Res in Hallowell this year. We will also be heading to The Fourth Annual New England Championships held at The Highland Mountain Bike Park in Northfield, New Hampshire. We have one home race this year at Maine Sport on Saturday, Sept. 27., with a start time of 1 p.m.

“I would like to thank the many Adult Riders who join us and help us improve our riding skills, said Spinney.” “I would also like to thank the past coaches Karl Enrosth, Casey Leonard and Athletic Director Steve Alex for their hours and hours of time put into the program The team wouldn't be where it is today if it wasn't for their hard work and commitment."
