Camden Hills boys soccer falls in regional quarterfinals

Thu, 10/26/2017 - 10:00pm

LEWISTON — Edward Little and Camden Hills squared off in the Class B North regional quarterfinals at Garcelon Field on the campus of Bates College with the Eddies emerging victorious with a hard fought 1-0 victory.

Edward Little started the game on the front foot and had the Windjammers on their heels during the opening stretch.

The 'Jammers clawed their way back into the game and were rewarded for their efforts when Ben Owre was taken down in the penalty area and a penalty kick was awarded.

Senior Captain Marshall Merriam struck the ball low and hard but Edward Little goalie Eli Thibodeau made the save to preserve the 0-0 tie.

That would be the scoreline at halftime and remain so until 20 minutes left to play in the game.

After a ball caromed around the penalty area Tyler Morin stroked a ball through a crowd and into the back corner of the net for the game winning tally. Camden Hills would not go down without battling until the end, but when the final horn sounded the Eddies were the 1-0 victors.

Lucas Boetsch, playing in his final high school game, showed his class making several high light reel saves and keeping the 'Jammers in the game until the end. He'd finish with 10 saves on 12 shots. Thibodeau would finish with 7 saves on 10 Camden Hills shots. EL had 4 corners to Camden Hills 3.

The boys played hard until the end tonight but the ball just didn't bounce our way. Lucas turned in yet another exceptional performance in net, making the extraordinary seem normal.

We had a really wonderful season and the growth of the team from August 14 until now was phenomenal. It's hard to see this remarkable journey come to a close.

We are grateful for the efforts of our seniors: Lucas Boetsch, Marshall Merriam, Andy Pitcairn, Elliot Matlack, Will Nickerson and Jack Nathan, they have left their mark on our program and we will miss them dearly.

On behalf of the coaching staff and players, thanks to all the fans who traveled to the game, supported us out in the rain and during the entirety of our fine season.
