ROCKPORT — Megan Cressler, who had a stellar hoop career at Camden-Rockport High School and the University of Southern Maine, has been appointed as the new Camden Hills Regional High School Girls Basketball Varsity Coach.  

“I am very excited to have Meg on our coaching staff and look forward to working with her,” said the school’s athletic director, Steve Alex, in a June 5 news release. “Meg brings a tremendous amount of playing and coaching experience with her and I am confident that she is going to do a great job not only leading our girls high school program but also providing great support to our local youth basketball programs.”

Cressler has been away from the coaching scene for a few years now, busy with raising her young daughter, said Alex.

In 2009, she was the varsity assistant at Camden Hills. Before that, Cressler coached the Belfast Lions for three seasons, leading them into the Eastern Maine Class B quarterfinals in 2007 and 2008. Belfast’s best year under Cressler was 2006-07, in which the Lions went into the quarterfinals with the No. 5 seed after a 12-6 regular campaign, said Alex.

Prior to coaching at Belfast, Cressler coached girls basketball at the Lincolnville Central School for two seasons.

Cressler graduated from Camden-Rockport in 2000, leading coach Jay Carlsen’s Windjammers to the Class B state championship as a senior. Cressler is among the 1,000 point scorer's club and earned Eastern Maine tournament MVP honors in addition to being a BDN All-Maine first-teamer that season.

Prior to earning her degree in communications from USM in 2004, Cressler helped lead coach Gary Fifield’s Huskies to multiple Little East conference titles and NCAA Division III tournament appearances all four years of college. She also was a 1,000 point scorer, was induced into the USM Husky Hall of Fame this past fall, and was a recipient of the Paula D. Hodgdon Leadership Award her senior year at USM.

 "I'm extremely excited and honored to be the girls’ coach,” said Cressler, in the release. “This is a wonderful opportunity to help the program return to a  highly successful level of play, year in and year out. This group has a great balance of experienced Senior's and young talent. It should be a fun year for everyone."

Coach Cressler and members of the Windjammers girls basketball teams will be holding a basketball clinic for girls in grades 3-8 beginning June 30 and running through July 3 at Camden Hills Regional High School.

Grades 3-5 will run from 8 to 10 a.m. and grades 6-8 will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Registration is now open through the "Camp Banner" on the Five Town Basketball website. Registration fee is $65 per student and all proceeds will go directly to the Five Town Basketball program. This clinic is open to all girls in grades 3-8 no matter what town one lives in.
