Camden Area Christian Food Pantry expands operations

Thu, 01/25/2018 - 11:00am

The Camden Area Christian Food Pantry has begun its winter ground breaking for a new addition at 128 Mount Battie Street in Camden.  Despite the cold season, contractors were able to dig out and pour footings and the foundation in December.

The Camden Area Christian Food Pantry thanks supporters and past donations, who enabled the pantry to serve many families and individuals in our its eight town service area.

The Board of Directors consists of people from five local churches, including Saint Thomas Episcopal, Our Lady of Good Hope, the First Congregational Church, Chestnut Street Baptist Church, and John Street United Methodist Church.  The pantry is a 501c3 and, therefore, a public charity.  Accordingly, it opens its doors and serves those in its service area without regard to their religious, political, sociological, or personal lifestyle preferences.

The expansion is expected to cost approximately $100,000.

To reserve existing funds for food products and personal healthcare items, the pantry has set a goal of raising $50,000 over the next 12 months from a number of sources.  These include seeking capital grants, donations from local organizations, businesses, and individuals.

Food insecurity in Maine is real and growing and goes up during winter and hard economic times. Job losses, foreclosures, and fear for the future put tremendous stress on families to meet this need.  It is an issue that must be faced and is a constant reminder of the deeper, personal and yet, often private needs of the community and its people.

Consider making a donation to the cause.  All contributions are tax-deductible and will be acknowledged by a letter of thanks and a receipt.
