BELFAST — A 45-year-old Brooks man was killed in a single vehicle accident on East Waldo Road Oct. 8, according to Chief Michael McFadden, of the Belfast Police Department.

Sergeant Brian Lunt and Officer Travis Spencer responded to the scene around 9:50 p.m., after a concerned citizen reported a vehicle on fire.

The victim, who was still in the vehicle upon police arrival, was unconscious throughout the incident.

Though the cause of the accident is currently unknown, it is believed the pickup truck first drifted into the oncoming lane of travel before leaving the roadway. The vehicle then traveled slightly into a ditch, over a driveway, and into a wooded area, where it ultimately struck a large pine tree.

The vehicle  was fully engulfed in flames when police arrived on scene. Attempts to extinguish the fire with the fire extinguishers police carry on board were unsuccessful, forcing Lunt and Spencer to wait for the arrival of the Belfast Fire Department.

There were reportedly multiple explosions during the fire, including burst tires and combustible possessions inside the vehicle.

The victim  will be examined by the Chief Medical Examiner to determine an official cause of death.

The Waldo County Sheriff’s Office is assisting Belfast Police in reconstructing the accident.

Belfast Police have not released the victim’s name.
