Belfast man recognized for 45 years of service in Coast Guard Auxiliary

    ROCKLAND — David W. Cassida of Belfast last month was awarded the Membership Paddle for 45 years of service to the community and the nation. The recognition was made during an award ceremony at the U.S. Coast Guard Station in Rockland on Aug. 15.

    Cassida, a member of the USCG Auxiliary First Division Northern Region’s Rockland Flotilla 1-5, joined the Coast Guard Auxiliary on March 4, 1969. He holds the coxswain rating and in the course of his service he has been an instructor for boater safety courses and has served as a vessel examiner and an operations officer. He has volunteered more than 3,800 hours to the Coast Guard Auxiliary, both afloat and ashore.

    He recently made an appearance volunteering at the Camden Windjammer Festival along with other Auxiliary members, including former Camden Select Board member Syd Lindsley,

    Cassida currently heads up the Paddle Smart program for the Flotilla. He was recognized for his long volunteer service and outstanding performance through the years in various staff positions at the Flotilla and District levels.
