BELFAST — Peter Spectre, an incoming senior at Belfast Area High School, was selected as a senator for American Legion Boys Nation in Washington, D.C., while he attended the annual American Legion program from July 17 to 24. While there, Spectre was elected vice president of Boys Nation in a tied vote of 49-49 that ended in a coin toss. He ran the Senate from that point forward.

Spectre and the elected president Aravind Byju, were featured on the Jim Bohannon show on July 22.

Boys Nation is an annual American Legion program that includes civic training, leadership development and a focus on Americanism. Spectre previously served as chief justice of the Supreme Court at Maine Boys State, which had over 200 student delegates. Spectre was joined by fellow Mainer Seamus McDonough of Wells High School.

At Belfast Area High School, Spectre serves as student senate vice president, vice president of the National Honor Society, Co-President of the Liberian Education Fund, as well as being a student mentor for second graders.

He is also a varsity athlete, playing on the school’s baseball and soccer teams. Outside of school, Spectre is an avid skier and snowboarder. He works a summer internship at the Belfast Historical Society and Museum. He hopes to attend Dartmouth College for Business and Economics.
