Belfast Garden Club Evening Lecture Series to hear from wildlife biologist Gail Presley

This winter the Belfast Garden Club Evening Lecture Series, co-sponsored by the Belfast Free Library, will focus on new approaches to garden design for resiliency and conservation. The first program, Tuesday, January 23, at 6:30 p.m., wildlife biologist Gail Presley will speak about “Encouraging Wildlife in Our Gardens.”

“Through planning and placement, we can enhance the habitat features wildlife need to thrive in our gardens,” said the Garden Club, in a news release.

In this talk, Presley will explore habitat needs, how to design your landscape to provide habitat, how to choose plants to add or remove, and other steps toward rewilding landscapes.

Gail Presley worked as a wildlife biologist who in landscape conservation for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife for 22 years. Later she led the Georges River Land Trust for seven years. Her property in Rockland was a blank canvas that she began to fill with vegetable and flower gardens, fruit trees, and native plants. She has a BS from California Polytechnic State University in wildlife conservation.

The Evening Lecture Series continues February 27 with a talk on “Resilient Garden Design” by Irene Barber, Adult Education and Horticultural Therapy Program Manager, Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens; and on March 26, Rebecca Goldenthal will give a talk titled “In Full Bloom: Container Gardens.”
