Belfast Bay Watershed Coalition announces Feb. 2024 programs, book discussion

Fri, 01/26/2024 - 5:00pm

BELFAST — In February, the Belfast Bay Watershed Coalition will host their annual meeting and volunteer recognition night, a nature outing and a book discussion at the Belfast Free Library. All events are free and open to the public.

Saturday, February 10, 8:30-10 a.m. Join the Belfast Bay Watershed Coalition to watch birds in Belfast Harbor. Winter is the best season for seeing birds in this watershed. There are several arctic species who migrate to this region. From January through March, Ron Harrell and Gary Gulezian will lead the monthly bird watch, on the second Saturday of each month. They’ll have their spotting scopes to observe birds in the harbor area and answer questions about them. Meet at the Belfast Footbridge at 8:30 a.m. Participants are encouraged to bring personal binoculars and dress appropriately for the weather.

Thursday, February 15, 6:30 p.m. Belfast Bay Watershed Coalition’s Annual Meeting and Volunteer Recognition Night at the Belfast Library. Current members, new members and all community members are welcome. Join BBWC to vote on the board of directors, celebrate another year of initiatives and thank our volunteers who make it all happen.

Saturday, February 17, 10am-Noon. Snowshoe/Ski Sucker Brook Trail

Sucker Brook Trail is a new addition to Coastal Mountains Land Trust’s Meadow Brook Preserve in Swanville. Meet at 10:00 am at 593 Oak Hill Road, Swanville. Participants should bring their own snowshoes or skis, boots, poles, water and a snack and are advised to wear warm layers. For more info contact: 338-1147

Tuesday, February 27, 3-4pm. Winter Book Discussion with the Belfast Bay Watershed Coalition. This month's selected book is The Best American Science and Nature Writing 2022, ed. by Ayana Johnson. The editor of this collection chose essays that would "put ideas into conversation with one another." Essays range from short to long, from technical to whimsical, from somber to hopeful. Find something fascinating here. Become the person at any table with the most interesting conversation! We'll focus on specific essays: the introduction (p. xvi), How Far Does Wildlife Roam (p.30), How Rising Groundwater. (p. 51), Power Shift (p.246) and Why Combining Solar Power and Farms (p.231). Readers will be invited to talk about essays that they particularly enjoyed. Discussion to be facilitated by Jennifer Craig.
