Bay Chamber commences 2017 Summer Concert Season

Thu, 07/13/2017 - 2:30pm

Bay Chamber Concerts is proud to announce its Summer 2017 Concert Series and Screen Door Festival program. Running from July 13 to August 20 Bay Chamber will present more than 30 events in Rockport and Camden spanning many musical genres. Tickets to the concerts, including subscriptions and money saving passports are now available at baychamberconcerts.org.

Bay Chamber's Summer Concert Series and Screen Door Festival celebrate great music, atmospheric venues and a unique heritage of world-class music making on the coast of Maine. There are many possible pathways through this diverse and celebratory season. Programming focuses on Beethoven's great works for string quartet, piano trio and cello/piano duo, including performances by Chiara and Attacca Quartets as well as by our Andrew Wolf Chamber Music Award winner, Gilles Vonsattel with clarinetist Todd Palmer and the astonishing Swedish cellist, Jakob Koranyi. The passionate and luscious creativity of Brahms' music also enriches the program in multiple concerts including what will be an intense and intimate performance of Brahms' D Minor Violin Sonata by the dazzling young violinist Ben Beilman and pianist, Haochen Zhang in Union Hall as part of the Café Nights Series.

There are stories - personal, universal, and love-affirming - woven through pieces and concert programs throughout the summer, culminating with Apollo and Daphne, the season finale. New music and cherished masterpieces, much-loved friends and artists making their Bay Chamber debuts all come together this summer to share stories through music.

Bay Chamber's Screen Door Festival, offering multiple performances each day from August 16 – 20, is a five-day musical gathering featuring fresh performances by world-renowned musicians, all in a distinctly relaxed summer-in-Maine atmosphere. Speaking about the festival, Manuel Bagorro said, "while you can get your Bach, Beethoven, or Brahms fix at the festival, you will also experience novel, one-of-a-kind creative happenings — events that connect audience and artists through music." Each day starts with Bach for Breakfast, a conversation concert with acclaimed violinst and pedagogue, Cynthia Miller Freivogel performing and discussing JS Bach and his contemporaries of the Baroque era.

Also on the summer schedule are free community concerts including a performance in Rockport Marine Park by Creative Ensemble Collective, a recital by cellist Christopher Costanza, at Zoot Café, and a first-ever free concert on Megunticook Lake on Saturday, August 5, at 6 p.m. featuring Brown Rice Family.

"Today's freshest world roots band jamming towards global solidarity and organic happiness," Brown Rick Family will play off a dock where boaters, kayakers and even paddle boarders can join the flotilla and groove to their reggae, hip-hop, dancehall, afro beat, jazz stylings, rock, brazilian, Latin, and funk styles.

Bay Chamber's 2017 summer program is fun, friendly and flush with surprises.
