ROCKPORT — August was a little drier this year compared to last year, even though we got some soaking rain. But overall, the Midcoast has seen more precipitation this year than in 2013, and it has been wetter overall than average.

According to the Monthly Water Almanac, compiled courtesy of Maine Water Co. using data from the Mirror Lake Weather Station in West Rockport, August produced 2.94 inches of rain.

August 2013 had 3.78 inches of precipitation; the average is 3.13 inches.

So far this year, total precipitation has measured 42.07 inches. Last year at this time (end of August), the region measured 31.02 inches of precipitation; the average by the end of August is 30.57 inches.

Year 2014 has been a wet one. But the driest August on record was 1948, when a mere .22 inches of rain fell. (That year followed another dry year: in 1947, Maine received only 50 percent of its normal rainfall, and in the fall of 1947, the infamous Bar Harbor fire occurred, with nearly half of the east side of Mt. Desert Island in flames.)

The wettest August on record in was 1991, when 8.3 inches of rain was record.

August 2014 did not produce very hot temperatures: The warmest day was Aug. 27 with a maximum temperature of 80F. The coldest day was Aug. 13, at 60F.

In 2013, the hottest day was Aug. 19 at 82F and the coldest, Aug. 8 at 64F.
