Attention Rockport: Town to send library survey this month

Wed, 09/06/2017 - 8:00am

Rockport residents are to receive in the mail a community-wide survey being conducted by the Portland Research Group to determine a path forward for the Rockport Public Library.

“We also will embark on a campaign to get as many Rockport residents to participate in the survey and tell us what they think,” according to Rick Bates, Rockport Town Manager. “The key to this effort being successful is that we hear from people we have not heard from in the past.”

The survey is to be mailed by mid-September and will be followed by a reminder postcard and a door-to-door reminder campaign to encourage people to tell the town what they think.

The initial letter sent to Rockport residents is as follows:

The Town of Rockport is reaching out to all residents to get a better idea of how we can resolve the library question. And it’s extremely important that we know what you think about it.

On or around September 14th 2017, you will receive a letter asking you to fill out a brief questionnaire.

The library has been a topic of conversation for the past five years. As you may recall, the question on issuing a bond appeared on the November Ballot... and failed by only 9 votes, which means essentially it was a tie vote, statistically speaking.

We need a more conclusive path forward, one that an overwhelming number of residents can support. And we need your input on how to get there.

We want... NO... we need to hear from you, so we can make some decisions about a number of critical issues. We especially need to hear from those who have not spoken up at the meetings, have not written to Town officials about the library, or who may not have voted at all.

As you’ll see, the questionnaire is professionally produced and your responses will remain strictly confidential. It shouldn’t take more than 15 minutes to complete. But the information it will give us will be extremely valuable.

Please... please... please, on September 14, watch your mailbox for the letter and questionnaire. Don’t throw it away as unsolicited mail. (You’ll also receive instructions on how to fill it out online to save even more time and expense.) Help us get a huge number of responses.

E-mail any questions you may have about this effort to rockportlibrarysurvey@town.rockport.me.us or call the Town Office at 236-0806.
