Appleton Girl Scouts lead Quarry Hill caroling

CAMDEN — On Saturday, Dec. 20, Appleton Girl Scouts led a room full of Quarry Hill residents in the singing of Christmas carols and songs, as well as Let it Go from the movie Frozen

Quarry Hill resident Mary Carlson provided piano accompaniment for most of the hour-long performance.  For one song, Carlson vacated the piano bench so that troop member Emma Shackelford could accompany her peers.

Emma, eight years old, has been taking piano lessons for a year and a half.  Her willingness to perform at this event has earned her a special piano patch.

All members of the troop earned snowman charms to add to their bracelets of scout accomplishments.  The snowman charms represent this season’s set of community service projects.

Last weekend, the girls made 25 Promise Pies that were dispersed along with gift baskets from the Appleton Grange.

Their hats and mittens drive, which they dubbed, “Warm Hugs” after seeing Frozen, has been accumulating contents that the girls will distribute at the first of the year, according to Troop Leader Amanda Gurney.

The boxes, decorated in the Frozen theme, can be found at the Appleton Library, Quarry Hill, the Appleton Village School, Deer Foot Farm, the Appleton Town Office, and Burkettville General Store in Appleton.

Of the three boxes looked into recently, an estimated 40-50 sets of mittens and hats have been accumulated.

In preparation for this performance, the girls decorated ornaments which they gave to audience members.

This is the second year that the troop has performed a holiday sing-along with Quarry Hill residents.

“They asked to come back this year,” said Gurney of the girls.  Gurney said there is no age restriction for girls to participate, so all of them will be back next year, as well.
