ROCKPORT — The 10th annual Serving to End World Hunger tournament took place Nov. 21 at Midcoast Recreation Center, and is an event that raises funds to help fight local and global hunger relief.

As the last match was played and donations tallied, the event, hosted by the Meyer and Chase families, will have raised close to $80,000 for local and global hunger relief. This event showcases the giving and caring nature of MRC and the Midcoast tennis community.

"We raised $16,000 to $20,000 yesterday," said Seth Meyer of MRC. "In its 10 years of existence, the event is closing in on $80,000. The proceeds will be donated to local food banks, AIO and Good Shepard, and global hunger relief efforts."

The tournament ran about four hours and was a 32-person event with a round robin format. Players were divided into two flights. The top two men and women from each flight then faced off in a final, which brought the day’s on-court festivities to a close.

This year's winners were Randy and Vicky Cutri, who defeated Laura Mackay and Alan Frye 6-2 in the final.

Preceding the event people had the chance to take on The "Meyer Men" in a challenge match. Players face off against Seth and Bruce Meyer with each lost game costing more in donations.

"We didn't have to pay too much," said Meyer.

Of course, he had a pretty big grin on his face when he said it and he would not give a straight answer as to how much the Meyer Men had to pay.
