The Mobile Vet Van was in the parking lot of the Breakwater Marketplace building in Rockland yesterday from 10am-130pm.  If memory serves correct this is the 4th year in a row that the Van has come for the day.  Although no medical services were offered, there were representatives from both the VA system and University of Maine, Augusta.  Both parties were highly educated and informed (as well as being former service members) about the services and benefits that are afforded to our Veteran community.

I was there from noon on and had an opportunity to talk not only to the folks working the Van but also some Veterans who happened to stop in for services.  One former Army medic and Afghanistan Vet was considering entering into college and had a pretty good plan for success.  I spent some time educating him about some of the issues I faced while entering the college system, namely this: Don't try to understand every aspect of every form and bit of red tape you need to work on to get your benefits (though that is helpful, just difficult on your own).  Find that person whose job it is to know those things and become their best friend, pass everything through them and keep in close contact.

I was delighted to find out that after his meeting with URock Director Deb Meehan the young Veteran had purchased a URock hoodie and was amped up to start the next chapter of his life: Education!
