Awning History

Did you know that awnings were first used by the ancient Eqyptians?  In ancient texts awnings are described as “woven mats” that shaded homes and market areas.  The most famous and significant awning of the ancient world was named the velarium, it was a massive complex of retractable shaded structures that could be deployed above the seated areas of the Roman Colosseum.  Made out of linen shadecloths, timber frames, iron sockets and rope, the system could shade one-third of the arena and seating.  It is believed that ancient sailmakers were employed to build, maintain and operate the velarium.

"Linen-awning, stretched, over mighty theatres, gives forth at times, a cracking roar, when much 'tis beaten about, betwixt the poles and cross-beams".
